Rack online Southern California Est. uptime: still going

Erick Uribe

Builds things that glow in racks

A rack in the garage, a dozen glowing panels, and a refusal to guess at root cause. Day job's over here.

Selected builds

Dashboard · live

Homelab HUD

A 1U rack-mounted status screen. Three pages of retro CRT dashboard covering the network, the servers, and a crypto page, driven off a shared internal API.

Weather station · open source

The Pencreus

Retro terminal weather station on a reflective LCD — the panel is readable in direct sun and sips power. Home of the mascot art, including the portrait up top.

Kitchen companion · live

Kitchen HUD

A 5-inch wall companion with seven screens — weather, calendar, transit, printers — built glance-first, so the thing you need is the biggest thing on screen.

Home control · live

Garage Display

Six-tile touch controller for the garage, wired into Home Assistant. Dark theme, big targets, and a touch calibration that took longer to get right than the rest of it combined.

Printer monitor · port

BambuHelper, ported port

Ported an existing Bambu printer monitor to a 480×480 Guition panel and wrote a custom glance UI for it. Every colour rendered as a photo negative — which turned out to be two unrelated bugs stacked on top of each other, not one.

Flight tracker · live

ATC-Pi FlightTrackr

Calls out aircraft passing overhead, with audio alerts. The amplifier is single-open, so a second process grabbing the audio device fails completely silently — a fun one to chase.

How I work

Hands on

  • ESP32 / ESP-IDF / ESPHome / PlatformIO
  • Raspberry Pi, Jetson, Linux services
  • Python, FastAPI, C++, HTML/CSS/JS
  • MQTT, REST, Home Assistant
  • UniFi networking, VLANs, Docker

Principles

  • Read the source before naming a cause
  • Separate what's verified from what's a hunch
  • One big number beats a wall of gauges
  • Plain language over vendor jargon
  • Slow is fine. Confidently wrong isn't.
